Adult to Child Counselling Conversion Course: Diploma in Child Counselling

One year over Tuesdays with additional weekend days.

This course is a one-year conversion course designed for accredited or registered counsellors and psychotherapists with at least 4 years of clinical experience who want to gain:

  • A wealth of clinical skills for working with children
  • A sound working knowledge of the principles in child therapeutic practice, child protection, and child law, in order to be able to work safely and ethically with children
  • A sound working knowledge of child psychiatry, diagnostic categories and medication used with children
  • A sound working knowledge of the neuroscience and psychology of child development
  • A prestigious qualification evidencing a high level of competence in psychotherapeutic counselling with children
     

About the course content:

The course offers cutting edge theory and practice. Adopting an integrative approach, the Diploma draws on neuroscientific and psychotherapeutic theory, including attachment theory, object relations theory and with particular reference to the work of Winnicott, Kohut, Bowlby, Perls and Berne. The Diploma in Child Counselling offers a wealth of clinical techniques to develop a meaningful dialogue with a child in ways that promote emotional health. The use of creative media, such as sandplay, art, puppetry, clay and storytelling, are central to the training.

Duration:

The course is held on Tuesdays over three academic terms with additional weekend days. Where a student has time constraints, it is possible to attend some of the weekend days over an additional year.

Admissions:

All applicants will be accredited with BACP or registered with UKCP or UKAPC. They will have completed a minimum of 450 counselling training hours on a recognised counselling course and accrued at least 450 client hours (supervised practice) over a minimum of four years. Applicants will also have undergone personal counselling or psychotherapy over a minimum of 3 years (at least 120 sessions).

Registered senior child psychotherapists, counsellors, international guest trainers working with child trauma, attachment disorders, and a multitude of diagnostic categories. Expert professionals from the fields of Education, Health, Parent-Child Therapy, Family Therapy and Neuroscience. Many of these have published widely.
