"I have found that using various art forms has enabled me to experience myself and my history differently and engage at a deeper level with my own process. What I experienced at IATE is inspirational teaching so that I could digest and expand on my previous training and experience. Having experienced the arts and the training offered at IATE I feel hungry in my soul to learn more."

Certificate in Counselling Skills
Back to all 'Skills Based Courses'Duration:
Four weekend days (for internal students only)
This exciting and innovative course will address the relationship between the Arts and Counselling skills. Thus students who attend will be getting something far more than they would from an average 30 hour counselling course. Moreover, many Creative Arts trainings give little time to actual counselling skills, and yet these are a vital foundation for any effective therapeutic intervention. So this course is designed to support, strengthen and enrich the work of therapists where creativity and imagination are key modes of intervention.
The Programme offers:
- An introduction to the relevance of Counselling Skills for Arts Therapists.
- Counselling as connection with the creative unconscious.
- Counselling through the Arts to deepen relationship with self.
- The widening of relational options through the creative one-to-one.
- Whole group lecture sessions, skills groups, giving and receiving feedback, reflection on
application to practice.
- Theoretical input and the opportunity to develop with fundamental counselling skills including:
- Reflecting
- Paraphrasing
- Empathic listening
- Focussing
- Use of immediacy
- Transparency
- Tracking
- The Therapeutic Frame
- Contracting
