History

The Institute has been in operation for 22 years. It was founded by an eminent Child Psychiatrist, a Professor of Performing Arts, and an Integrative Arts Therapist.

Together they had a vision about art as medicine. Collectively and through research and clinical practice, they knew the healing power of the human imagination. They wanted to offer training courses to empower practitioners to have the most profound conversation possible with the people with whom they worked. Towards this end, they wanted to train people to use expressive language (arts and imagery) alongside the usual everyday language.

They also firmly believed that offering just one art form to the child, teenager or adult is unnecessarily depriving, so they were determined to offer a course which offered seven art forms.

Over the years, the Institute has grown from strength to strength. Now it is a British Accredited Higher and Independent Education College and academic partner of London Metropolitan University. It runs three Masters Degree courses, has 350 students and teaching takes place in its own magnificent premises in Islington.
